Reverse culture shock

Returning home can bring mixed emotions. You’re excited to see your friends and family again, but they may not understand how transformative study abroad was. What you’re feeling is reverse culture shock. Similar to the culture shock you experienced abroad, overcoming it will take time. Here are some helpful resources for adjusting back to life at North Park:

  • Meet with Counseling Support Services to help you process and readjustment strategies.
  • Share your experiences with fellow North Parkers at the Study Abroad Fair or on our Instagram.
  • Visit an international grocery store to pick up your favorite snack.
  • Share your stories from abroad with a study abroad advisor.
  • Find a restaurant or café that serves your favorite dishes from abroad.

Professional development opportunities

  • Update your résumé with the skills and experiences gained abroad. Contact the Career Development Office for assistance.
  • Consider applying for a Fulbright Grant to study, research, or teach abroad after graduation. Contact campus Fulbright advisor Tessa Zanoni for more information.
  • At APSIA, find internships, fellowships, and graduate programs where you can foster the skills and knowledge from your study abroad experience.
