Latino and Latin American Studies at North Park


Expand your understanding of Latin American history and Hispanic and Latino life in the United States with a minor in Latino and Latin American Studies. As a minor, you’ll explore Latino cultures, literature, religions, and histories while deepening your intellectual, social, and political awareness.

Featured course


SPAN 3170–The Cultures of Latin America
Advanced intermediate course taught in Spanish that introduces major trends in four regions of Latin America: the Caribbean, the Andes, the Southern Cone, and Central America. Course content will expand vocabulary and reinforce grammar while improving skills of summary and synthesis.

Minor requirements


  • Prerequisite: Basic Spanish II (SPAN 1020) or equivalent
  • 18 semester hours beyond SPAN 1020
  • Portfolio submission including self-assessment, educational reflections, and coursework samples

Students can also complete coursework in Cuenca, Ecuador, or through the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities’ Latin American Studies Program in San José, Costa Rica. This minor must be paired with a major to fulfill graduation requirements.
