Molecular Biology and Biotechnology at North Park


Biotechnology combines biological techniques with knowledge from biology, chemistry, biochemistry, and mathematics to develop new products and solve problems using living systems. North Park’s interdisciplinary approach equips you with essential biotechnology training, critical thinking, and writing skills, alongside a strong biology foundation, preparing you for both graduate school and careers in the industry. In small classes, professors offer personalized attention, access to hands-on research, and opportunities for field trips to biotech industries.

BIOL 2910–Molecular Biology
Selected aspects of bacteria, viral and eukaryotic parasite morphology, identification, physiology, and lifecycles, with a focus on how microbes affect human health, society and the environment. Includes an overview of the immune system’s function, dysfunction, and modulation. Lab included.

Research opportunities


You’ll have the opportunity to conduct original hands-on research with guidance from experienced faculty mentors, applying classroom knowledge and lab techniques. This valuable research experience will give you a significant advantage when applying to graduate school. Field research trips to locations like Costa Rica, the Bahamas, and Taiwan offer immersive, for-credit courses where you’ll explore local ecology and culture with the support of North Park professors and local experts.

Dr. Timothy Lin, Professor of Biology

An avid supporter of student research, Lin has developed a new approach to undergraduate research projects that invites them to think critically and creatively about the biology. Using his expertise as a microbiologist, Lin helps his students conduct research on a wide range of scientific questions.
